“6 Non Smokers” from director Francis Abbey is a comedy for just about anyone whose ever taken a class in interpersonal communication. The lighthearted comedy follows Dr. Henry Cardwell (Jim Murphy) who is a world-renowned mediator. He is challenged by his arch rival Dr. Robertson (Frank B. Moorman) to get a house of 6 roommates to agree. The problem is these people have nothing in common except for the fact that they are all non-smokers. Robertson failed to bring the group together and wagers that Cardwell can’t do better than him in 100 days. Cardwell enlists the help of his pupil/assistant Dr. Regina Powell (Bridgetta Tomarchio) who ends up being a tad more prepared than him.
This movie has some really solid sequences of comedy as these roommates are placed through different exercises in hopes of getting them to become closer. I don’t want to spoil too much but I much enjoyed the interaction between these characters as they experience what the others do outside of the house.
Francis Abbey does a good job of making sure most of the characters get a good amount of screen time but at times it does feel a tad cluttered. This particularly happens when halfway through the 2nd act far too many characters are thrown into the mix and the film loses focus.
All that being said everyone is playing their characters with a smile and there is some genuine chemistry amongst this cast. The issue with this is that nobody gets to stand out too much though they all do get a moment or two with a genuine laugh.
The film runs a bit over 90 minutes and it’s about 10-15 minutes too long as certain sequences drag and the script seems to have to find ways for everyone to interact. This also causes the movie to feel episodic at times and this slows down the pacing and the energy. The sound also was a tad off, the dialogue was too soft and sometimes the bed music too loud. Some better sound and lighting would do this movie some good.
Overall it’s a fairly intriguing plot with a colorful and likeable cast of characters. I like this team and hope to see more from them in the near future. If you’d like to check out their website you can go here: http://www.skyrocketproductions.us
