A Dominatrix Story (2011) – By Cary Conley

Abby Lombard is a lonely, introverted young lady. She is unsure of herself, doesn’t have much luck with men, and seems content to live in an apartment above one of her late father’s laundry mats which she inherited after his death. When she isn’t hanging with her one friend, Faith, or working in the laundry mat, she spends a great deal of time grieving over her life. You see, Abby’s mother ran out on the family shortly after Abby was born, then her father died in a humiliating S&M affair while Abby was still quite young. Adopted by her father’s close friend, she has lived a relatively peaceful and sheltered existence since the tragic events that occurred during her early childhood. But Abby has a dark side to her, and she can’t shake the notion that there was more to her father’s "accident" than meets the eye.

The film opens as Faith drops Abby off at an artist’s studio. She wants a portrait made from the only surviving photo she has of her and her father, a tiny black-and-white picture of the two in a heart-shaped locket she wears around her neck. She meets hunky artist Tommy and one of his model friends, Victoria, a more mature, sultry vixen who poses for nudes by day and acts out dominatrix fantasies by night. Tommy is immediately taken by Abby’s natural beauty, but it’s Victoria and Abby who really hit it off. As Abby cultivates a tentative romantic relationship with Tommy, she also begins sexual experiments with Victoria.

Meanwhile, the murder of another person in L.A.’s bondage scene is splashed across the news. At first thought to be an accidental death during a particularly vigorous sex game, soon the police begin to suspect foul play. What does Abby know about her father’s mysterious death, and is it tied to this new death? Just who is this gorgeous but mysterious Victoria, and does she have a role to play in this whole sordid affair? And why would the friend of Abby’s father end up adopting Abby when he has no family of his own? All of these questions and more are answered by the end of this sexy and intriguing film.

Rebecca Larsen stars as Abby, and shows a remarkable range in her acting abilities. She is both sweet and sexy as she tries to gingerly feel her way through two very new and complicated sexual relationships. But when she zips up her vinyl body suit, dons her hot-pink wig, and slips on her six-inch leather heels, she reaches an even higher level of eroticism. It is a perfect blend of innocence and danger. Heather Lemire shines in the supporting role of Victoria, a vastly experienced dominatrix that oozes sex just by walking into the room. With her dark and mysterious gaze and large, pouty lips, she creates the feel of someone who is very experienced in sexual games and enjoys them intensely.

The rest of the supporting cast is also excellent as well, as is the cinematography. Cinematographer Bill Otto does an excellent job delivering fantastic cityscapes, with car lights running together in the night and gorgeous close-ups of the characters as they move through various emotions. Likewise, the editing is superb, with a particularly fractured series of shots near the end as Abby confronts and attacks her surrogate father. These shots, almost a montage, are used in conjunction with rapid editing cuts and really move the viewer as they portray the set of emotions that are running through Abby’s mind.

The writing is also strong; this is a complicated story, but it flows smoothly and allows the viewer to make the connections without any trite expository dialogue by the characters. It’s a smart script written for a smart audience, and quite entertaining. The score is also excellent. Sparse during the first third of the film, the musical selections that are chosen for this section of the film are gentle, much like Abby seems to be. Only as the film ratchets up the tension during the last third of the film does the score really pick up, drawing the viewer into the tense situations and adding emotional depth to these scenes. The music is particularly effective during several classic noir-like scenes that I thought were the highlights of the film.

Director Insung Hwang has assembled a remarkable cast and crew and created a darkly erotic and very sexy web of deceit and murder. A Dominatrix Story has seen a limited DVD release but now the film has received a new distribution deal, along with a title change. The new DVD will be released by Celebrity Home Entertainment sometime in March. For more information, see celebrityHE.com.
