A New and Accurate Map of the World (2007) – By Brian Morton

Sometimes a movie crosses my desk that is way too good for me. What do I mean by that? Well, I’m a true lover of the horror genre and independent horror particularly, and, when I get a movie that’s more art than movie, it tends to confuse me. That’s almost what happened with A New and Accurate Map of the World…almost!

The story is a simple one, Aiden is wandering by the water when he happens across Fiona. Aiden is a sort of uptight former Wall Streeter, who is trying to ‘find himself’, while Fiona is a free-spirited modern woman. The two find themselves instantly attracted to each other and decide to spend the day together. That’s pretty much the story, the real kernel of the movie is the relationship the two build so quickly, it’s a testament to love at first sight. At first, the viewer is left wondering what is going on, what is Aiden looking for, what is Fiona looking for and the answer is really, they don’t know either.

A New and Accurate Map of the World really hinges on the chemistry between Erik Wolfe’s Aiden and Jennifer Stackpole’s Fiona, the two actors have an amazing chemistry together and while Stackpole is stunningly beautiful, it’s not her looks that draw you in, it’s really her spirit (or rather her character’s spirit) and Wolfe’s Aiden is such an everyman that you find yourself just knowing that these two are going to wind up together.

Writer/director/producer Ryan Alexander has made a movie that’s as much art as love story. It’s one of those movies that you know will win awards! From dialogue to acting to just the look of the film, A New and Accurate Map of the World is just one of those movies that’s whole exceeds the sum of it’s parts. I’ll say it again, this movie was probably too good for a lowly reviewer like myself! I’m giving A New and Accurate Map of the World three and a half out of four cigars, and it only lost that half a cigar because (I’m sure) my simple mind is usually confused by movies that are meant as art (I guess that why I’m the Bad Movie Guy, not the Bad Film Guy!) but I can still tell you that, while I’m not a big fan of romances or chick flicks, I actually enjoyed this one. You can find out more about A New and Accurate Map of the World by heading over to the New and Accurate Map of the World MySpace page. So, until next time, when I’ll still be getting emails from guys calling me names for liking a romance, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
