An Interview with Gerald Nott, John Reynolds and Clint Glenn – By Nic Brown

 Filmmaker Gerald Nott keeps ending up in Texas. The Lone Star State has been a principal location for filming both of Nott Entertainment’s feature films. Texas also played host to the premiere of Gerald’s first movie, The Quick and the Undead, at the 2006 Texas Frightmare Weekend in Dallas. Now, nearly two years later, they’re back. This time it’s at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in Austin and they’re showing their newest film The Flesh Keeper. After the Friday afternoon panel discussion and screening, Gerald and his associates, producer and sometime zombie John Reynolds and actor Clint Glenn, spent the rest of the show talking to horror fans and meeting other industry people. I caught up with the trio during a lull in the crowds on Sunday afternoon and they spent some time telling me about The Flesh Keeper, their upcoming projects, and why John Reynolds must die for his films!

Nic—Guys, I understand that you’re here at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors promoting a couple of your films. Is that correct?

Gerald—Well, we’re promoting our zombie western that we released last year called The Quick and the Undead, and we’ve also got our new film The Flesh Keeper which we hope to have out on DVD later this year. The Flesh Keeper is a film about a group of Texas travelers who happen to make their way to a house where they start being chopped up and fed to the family’s special child who lives in the basement.

Nic—That seems to happen a lot in Texas….

Gerald—(laughing) Yes, yes it does.

Nic—So, you wrote The Flesh Keeper?

Gerald—I was the writer and director, same as on The Quick and the Undead.

Nic—Clint, what’s your role in The Flesh Keeper?

Clint—I play Christian. He’s basically a sociopath who really doesn’t want to be a killer, but his whole life he’s been forced to protect his little brother. His brother was the special one, and mother liked him more than Christian or the rest of her children, so they all had to protect him because, like Gerald said, he has a habit of eating human flesh.

 Nic– How about you John, what’s your role in the making of The Flesh Keeper?

John—Well, I’m the film’s producer. In addition to that I also have a small part in the movie. I play a character billed as “the hitchhiker” who of course dies a grizzly, gruesome death, which is part of my contract: that I die a grizzly, gruesome death in every film I make with these guys. (Everyone laughs).

Nic—I understand that, in addition to The Flesh Keeper, you all worked together on The Quick and the Undead. Is that correct?

Gerald—Yeah, we did. In fact, many of the same actors and crew that worked on The Quick and the Undead worked on our new film The Flesh Keeper.

John– …And we used a lot of the same sets and locations too.

Nic—So where did you shoot The Flesh Keeper?

Gerald—We shot The Flesh Keeper just south of Dallas in that part of North Texas. It was actually filmed mostly at The Trinity Institute, which is the same location where we shot a lot of The Quick and the Undead. We just used a different exterior, but all the same interiors.

Nic—The Quick and the Undead has been available on DVD for a while now. How has that film been received?

Gerald—Oh excellently! It’s out from Anchor Bay Entertainment and has been available for about a year now and it’s great. You can walk into any Blockbuster and find it on the shelves, it’s available on the internet, and it’s in retail stores. So it got a good release and it’s been doing well for us.

Nic—What about The Flesh Keeper? When will that be available for public consumption? No pun intended.

Gerald—(laughs) I don’t know yet. Hopefully, later on this year. We don’t have a definitive street date for it yet though.

 Nic—Clint, I heard that you have a few projects you’re working on in addition to your work with Gerald and John. What can you tell me about that?

Clint—Well, I’m actually trying to get a project off the ground called Dead Man’s Hand, which I wanted to shoot in the style of 300 and Sin City, a graphic novel that would be filmed using a green screen. It will be set in the Old West, but also in a spirit world like Hell.

Nic—That sounds interesting. Is it something you wrote?

Clint—Yes I wrote it and I’m planning to direct it as well. So I’m pretty excited about it!

Nic—I can understand why. Now John, what are you planning for your next project?

John—I have an idea for a vampire film that I’m working on now. I always liked the Hammer Studio vampire films so I’d like this one to be kind of a throwback to those movies or the early 70’s Count Yorga. This will be an old-fashioned, stake-through-the-heart kind of movie. No more Blades or Underworlds. It will be much more traditional vampire horror.

Nic—Hammer films were the best. That should be a fun film to make and watch.

John—That’s what I’m hoping.

Nic—Gerald, how about you? What’s the next project you have lined up for Nott Entertainment?

Gerald—I’m not entirely sure right now. About the only thing I can really guarantee you is that there will be blood!
