NG (2007) - By Brian Morton

Posted on Tuesday, April 01 @ Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

What is it about serial killers that fascinate so many of us? I include myself in that group, by the way. Is it the fact that the dark side draws all of us on some level? Or the fact that we all have a bit of darkness in us and when someone lets it overwhelm them it rouses all of our curiosity? It's hard to explain, but it's true. A new short film by Tim Jieh, NG, is a taste of America's first Chinese serial killer, Charles Ng, but a taste that will leave you wanting more!

The story, for those who don't know it, is that Charles Ng and his partner, Leonard Lake, captured, tortured, raped and killed 25 people in the 80s, videotaping the horrific proceedings! What Mr. Jieh has done is give us a taste of one of these videotapes, we meet both killers and see what we first believe is just another innocuous home movie, but as it plays out, there's more going on here, something very, very wrong!

Clocking in at less than ten minutes, NG is a film that deserves more time. Granted that more time and more filming takes more money (a sad but consistent complaint of all low budget filmmakers!) but if any short film deserves to be expanded on, it's NG! I'm giving NG four out of four cigars for whetting my appetite for more horror. If you'd like to check this cool, ambitious 'too short' film, drop over to Tim Jieh's YouTube page and check it out for yourself. Knowing that it's based on real events makes this short that much creepier. So, until next time, when I'll be wildly erasing the tapes of all the stuff I've done in the past, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
