Film Reviews: Vegasland (2008) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Monday, June 02, 2008 @ 20:44:05 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

Crime dramas are pretty hard to do on a low budget, but when they're done well you not only get to see a good movie, you can get a glimpse of what a filmmaker can do if only he had a larger budget. That's what you can see when you watch the new movie from the Yuzzi Brothers, Vegasland.

Vegasland is the story of Eddie, an 'honest' bookie who's getting a bit older and feeling like he should leave his life of crime and go straight. When Eddie finds himself on the wrong end of a psychotic cop, who's looking for Eddie's roommate, Worm, Eddie's has a night that he'll not soon forget!

I could tell you more, but that would give away a good story, wouldn't it? What I can tell you is that, for the most part, this is a great crime drama in the vein of The Usual Suspects, the acting is good, the story is strong and the look of the movie is great. The only problem with the movie at all, is that it's a bit long, and that seems to be because, as Eddie and the cop are travelling from place to place, there are quite a few shots of the Vegas skyline and the surrounding area, that seem to be there to fill time and allow us to hear the music. Now, don't think I'm complaining, I enjoyed this movie immensely, it's that rarest of things, a low budget crime drama that actually works, and I've only seen a handful of those since I've been watching movies!! I'm giving Vegasland three and a half out of four cigars, if you'd like to find out more, you can head over to the Vegasland website. So, until next time when I'll be planning my heist, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
