Film Reviews: Brutal Massacre (2008) - By Brian Morton Posted on Friday, August 01, 2008 @ 12:02:07 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane
When the cover of a DVD says 'The Spinal Tap Of Horror', you know it has my attention. Being a fan of both Spinal Tap and horror, my hopes were pretty high for Brutal Massacre, and you know what? This is one movie that totally lived up to the hype!
David Naughton plays Harry Penderecki, a director of 80s horror movies, who hit it big with his movie, I'll Take The Ring Back...And The Finger Too, now he's going to make a comeback with his next big horror movie, Brutal Massacre. This is a mockumentary that follows Penderecki from getting financing for the movie, where he’s told that if you’re going to make money with a horror movie, you’ll “need more titties, son!”, through the actual production and release of the film. If you know anything about making movies, then you're going to love this! There's the assistant director (played by Clerks' Brian O'Halloran) who scouts locations and does anything that required all in the hopes of getting his shot in the big chair. There's the production manager (played by The Evil Dead's Ellen Sandweiss) who's slightly in love with the director, but don't test her, she's a total hard-ass and she has a great scene with the septic system of an RV! Then there's the lead grip (played by Dawn Of The Dead's Ken Foree) who's loyal to his director to a fault....literally. And finally, for you horror heads out there, there's the owner of the location (played by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's Gunnar Hansen), a foul mouthed hick who, when asked if the production can use his house, informs the crew, "do whatever you want to the fucker, I'm just gonna tear the fucker down and rebuild the motherfucker!", if you've had any contact or seen any interviews with Mr. Hansen, you know that this character is completely the opposite of his normal demeanor, which makes it all the more funny!
I'm giving Brutal Massacre four out of four cigars, it may be the funniest movie about the making of a horror movie that I've ever seen. If you're a fan of horror, then you're going to love this movie, but, if you're not, it's still a movie that you'll laugh at...out loud! I can't recommend Brutal Massacre highly enough, yes, it's that good. You can find out more, or get a copy for yourself by heading over to the Anchor Bay web site. So, until next time, when I'll be still be telling everyone with ears, how good this movie is, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
