Film Reviews: Cowboy Killer (2008) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Wednesday, October 01, 2008 @ 00:05:00 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

There are alot of people out there who are attempting to make 'exploitation' movies that appear to be from the 70s, and, for the most part, they're not very successful at it. But, after checking out the new movie, Cowboy Killer, I had to triple check the date, I was sure that the guys over at Cacchiotii Productions had dug up an unknown gem from the 70s...but no! This is a new movie that actually looks and feels like what it's supposed to be, a drive in movie from the 70s...and that's a huge compliment!

The story here is fairly simple, Roy Thompson, a deranged cowboy who lives by his own twisted code, travels the countryside, and, when he comes across someone who catches his eye, that person is liable to wind up dead in some heinous way! Roy does everything from gunning down a group of teenagers on the way to homecoming, to running over an old lady with her son in the truck with him! Now, don't think that Roy is completely unsympathetic, he's not! We get a glimpse into his childhood, and find out why he's as twisted as he is.

I have to admit, that when I first saw the movie in my inbox, I wasn't looking forward to something about a killer cowboy, but this movie won me over very quickly and I can't find one thing wrong with it. Cowboy Killer mimics the drive in or exploitation movies from the late 70s and early 80s perfectly, director Jason Baustin even filmed it in a way that it looks like one of those films shot on Super 8 and transferred to 16mm, which gives it a more realistic feel! I really did have to stop and get close to my TV screen to believe that this was made this year! I'm giving Cowboy Killer four out of four cigars, because this is a mock drive in movie that would have definitely played at the drive in...and I would have put my car seat back, grabbed my beer and enjoyed it! You can relive your own drive in memories by heading over to the Cowboy Killer movie site to find out how to get a copy for yourself. So, until next time, when I'll be sitting here, a bit depressed over the death of the drive in...again...Thanks Cacchiotti Productions!...so, until the anti-depressants kick in, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
