Film Reviews: Crewing Up (2008) - By Brian Morton Posted on Monday, November 03, 2008 @ 18:21:28 Mountain Standard Time by Duane
Comedy is funniest when it's got a basis in reality. Anyone who works in radio knows that WKRP In Cincinnati was a documentary, not a sit-com. With that in mind, it's my firm belief that the new internet series, Crewing Up, is probably pretty close to what it's like to work in TV on any level!
Crewing Up is the story of Addie, a Washington D.C. television producer who's engaged to Frank, the host of the show she produces. When Frank bails on the wedding to cover the story of a drunken Congressman, Addie has a meltdown and attacks Frank on live TV! Now, Addie is forced to do 500 hours of community service at a small public access station. I've seen the first three episodes and I have to say, this is a pretty engaging series. Dallas Thomas (who plays Addie) is funny, pretty and very identifiable. The surrounding cast of characters includes Jonathon Northover who plays the public access producer (who Addie finds she has an attraction to), Stephanie Sikes as Tina Jensen the local celebrity who's known as much for her cleavage as her talent and Todd Gaston as Zack Mabbetson, Tina's live show producer, who's obsessed with her cleavage! And there's Eric Schmacher as Frank Mann, the man who starts the whole ball rolling! Each character is well drawn and the writing is tremendous! Viewers really find themselves rooting for Addie and her quest to finish her community service surrounded by these strange, but lovable, people.
Crewing Up is the brain child of Melissa Cushman-Banczak and Richard Farmer, and I have my suspicions that Melissa and Richard have spent a little time as TV producers, or at least have been close enough to see what goes on behind the scenes! Crewing Up is great fun, whether you've been behind the scenes in the media or not, and I can't wait to see what happens to Addie next. I'm giving Crewing Up four out of four cigars, it's shot well, the acting is tremendous and the writing is beyond excellent! You can check out this cool series for yourself by heading over to the Crewing Up web site, where you'll find episodes, behind the scenes features and a ton more. You won't be disappointed, it's a web-series that I'll be following myself! So, until next time, when I'll share some stories about the radio station I work at, remember that just because I love you doesn't mean you're not a bitch...you'll have to check out Crewing Up to get that one!
