Film Reviews: Mutant (1984) - By Duane L. Martin Posted on Thursday, October 01, 2009 @ 01:07:13 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane
After a run in with some deep south rednecks who force their car into a creek, two vacationing brothers (Wings Hauser and Lee Montgomery) catch a ride to the next town up the road where they soon find themselves smack dab in the middle of a small town where they find a dead body that's been really thrashed and burned by what looks like some kind of a yellow acid. They get the sheriff, but he doesn't believe them because when they go back to the spot where the body was, it's gone. The sheriff does take a sample of some of the goo though and has a local doctor analyze it. Turns out, it's actually highly mutated blood. Soon, everyone is in a battle for survival as a nearby chemical plant is pumping chemical waste into the ground where it's mixing with the ground water and causing flu-like symptoms in people, which eventually turns them into murderous zombies with blood that's turned into a highly caustic acid. After one of the brothers is killed by a zombie, the other, with the help of the alcoholic sheriff and a pretty young school teacher, must fight for survival and discover the secret of the zombie plague so they can put a stop to it once and for all.
While it's more of a serious film than Uninvited (the other film on this DVD), this movie really holds your attention and is not only fun in its own way, but it also works well as a hard core zombie film.
The performances in the film are all quite good, especially considering it was 1984 and much of the acting in these types of films back then tended to be rather low rent and cheesy.
The real stand outs in the film however were the zombies. Man they were cool. The bubbling skin, the gaunt look, the gray palor and sunken, dark eyes...very cool and very classic looking while at the same time being rather scary as well. Plus, these aren't your typical shambling, unaware zombies out to eat as many brains as they can hold before their bellies explode, these zombies were quite active and really aggressive about going after living people.
When you watch a film like this, you don't have to sit there asking yourself questions like, "Well if the chemicals that were turning people into zombies was in the drinking water, then why didn't everyone turn into zombies? How come some people weren't affected? You probably will ask yourself that, but it doesn't really matter. Films like this don't have to make sense. You don't watch them for a biological study of chemically induced zombies, you watch them to have fun. This film is not only fun, but it really does hold your attention, unlike so many other zombie type films of this era where you find yourself only half paying attention to what's going on after a while because it either just isn't all that interesting or it's been done a million times before so there's nothing really new to make you want to stay focused on it.
In the realm of 80's zombie films, this one is pretty great, and coupled with the also great Uninvited on the same DVD, this is a disc you'll definitely want to add to your collection.
