Film Reviews: Somewhere Between Here and Now (2009) - By Brian Morton Posted on Thursday, October 01, 2009 @ 01:05:00 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane
Loneliness is a topic that many movies have pondered. Whether it's in horror, drama or comedy, loneliness is something that movies cover repeatedly and, it's a topic that we're all familiar with, we've all been lonely. Well, a new movie by Olivier Boonjing, Somewhere Between Here and Now, follows a group of people, who, even though they're together, are still desperately lonely.
Our story begins with Louise, a woman who's been traveling in Asia for the past three years and is just returning home to Brussels, Belgium. There her path crosses with Adrian, a man who's about to leave Brussels to begin a search for something he can't really define. When Adrian sees Louise, something compels him to follow her, and when the two meet, it seems that their loneliness takes a little break. The two travel to Adrian's apartment for coffee and when they decide to go out for dinner, their paths cross with Zoe, a woman who Adrian has a history with. Now the three move through Brussels together to a party for other travelers who have just come home.
Now, if you're looking for a slam-bang action movie, or a moving love story, then you shouldn't look here. Somewhere Between Here and Now is really a meditation on loneliness and looking for something to fill the empty space in yourself...and in the end, it seems that the only person who can fill that space is you. I'm giving Somewhere Between Here and Now three out of four cigars, it's a little slow, but it's a warm, nice movie. You can find out more about this film by heading over to the Somewhere Between Here and Now web page.
