Low and Micro-budget movies have really come a long way, with digital technology it seems that everyone out there is making a movie. But, for me, it's still fun to catch an older indie movie from time to time, a movie that was made with the old VHS camera, a movie that's not nearly a pretty or perfect as digital tech can make a movie, a movie that was made with sheer determination and passion. Well, if you like these kinds of movies too, then you'll love Wild Eye's latest, The Bloody Ape.The Bloody Ape is based on Poe's Murders in The Rue Morgue, and is exploitation at it's finest. The story revolves around Lampini, a sideshow pitchman who's featured attraction is an ape named Gorto, who he pitches as the gentlest animal in the jungle. Well, when Gorto escapes and people begin turning up dead in bizarre and grotesque ways, police begin hunting for a 'dark person', which leads us into the turn exploitation of the movie, the police are all terrible racists and when a 'dark person' is mentioned, attention immediately turns to an African-American who had a run in with one of the victims. In fact, they're so focused on him as their suspect that the officer in charge even throws away evidence that could exonerate him! The whole thing leads to a local video store, where Gorto is holed up!
The Bloody Ape is just your basic drive in movie (which I totally love), the story is fairly simple, the action is direct, the comedy is way over the top and the movie ends with a terrific set up for a sequel, which, since the movie was made in 1997, probably won't happen any time soon. If you're a fan of the drive in or just love low budget exploitation, then you're going to love The Bloody Ape, I'm giving it three out of four cigars, it's not perfect and, if you're not ready for the lower quality video that it was shot on, then you'll probably be distracted, but if you can get past all that, you're in for a real indie treat! You can find out more about how to get The Bloody Ape for yourself by heading over to the Wild Eye Releasing MySpace page.
