In Character Kings, Scott Voisin introduces us to 15 actors that you already know...but don't really know at all. People like Keith David, Ray Wise, Bob Gunton, men that you've seen in roles in everything from major Hollywood blockbusters, to little indie movies. These are working character actors, they’re the backbone of Hollywood and they may be the most interesting interviews you’ve ever read. While Voisin asks each actor nearly the same questions, it’s the answers that are fascinating, whether it’s someone like Jeffrey Combs (who you’ll probably remember from Reanimator) talking about his love of Poe and why he’s not planning on another Reanimator sequel, or if it’s Peter Jason, who tells stories about the Hollywood legends he’s rubbed elbows with, people like John Wayne and Orson Welles, you’re going to get great insights into what it’s really like to be a working actor, what it takes to stay in the acting business for 40 or more years, and, if you’re planning on being an actor, what you’ll need to maintain a career.

If you ever plan on working in the industry, Character Kings is probably a great primer on actors and how their minds work, but, if you’re just a fan of the movies, like me, this is a chance to actually get to know these men, who you already recognize on sight, but don’t really know. I’m giving Character Kings four out of four cigars, if you’re a fan of the movies, then you’ll find that you can’t put this book down! I know that, once it crossed my desk, it only lasted a day! It was a book that I wished had been twice as long. Here’s hoping that Mr. Voisin has a great success with this volume and takes us along to meet some more Character Kings!
