The Afterlife with Bony Tony is basically a late night talk show type of thing.  Well that's nothing new right?  Well, in this case it is, because it's not really a talk show.  It's more of a variety show with a macabre type of a theme.  Oh, and did I mention it's all done with puppets?

The host is a skeleton named Bony Tony, and he has a sidekick that's nothing but a disembodied head.  There's a skeleton band, news reports, commercials for ascension at a discount, a commercial for the cemetery where the show takes place and more.

Sounds pretty cool huh?  Well, yes and no.  In some ways it's extremely cool, but in the most important way...the content, it falls completely flat.

The extremely cool part about this show is pretty much everything revolving around the production itself.  The puppets, the graphics, the set design, the visuals, and basically everything else about this show are all highly professional looking and really well done  The only minor problem is with the sound.  I had to listen really attentively to catch all the dialogue.  Not because it was quiet, but because the music, effects and voice acting style made it just a little difficult to keep up with at times.

The only real problem I have with this show is the content, which was highly disappointing because everything else is just fabulous and there's a lot of talent that went into putting this together.  The content though..., I mean seriously, not one laugh.  I literally watched the whole thing with a straight face.  The only thing I found even remotely entertaining was the dead black guy puppet with the wandering eye.  The eye was pretty funny, but other than that, the content of the show, in its entirety just fell flat.

While I applaud the production itself, this show needs a lot of work on the content if it's going to be entertaining on any level other than visual.  With the proper writing and maybe a more amusing personality change for Bony Tony, this show has the potential to be great. The foundation is there with the awesome production values, but the writing just isn't there yet.  The nice thing is, that's the easiest part to work on, and I'm sure that over time the characters and the writing will develop well.  Director Nathan Green has a really great start of something here, and hopefully over time, he'll continue to build it up to its full potential.
