Being a wrestling fan, I sometimes take grief from others. From being teased for liking 'that fake shit' to being chided for enjoying grown men in tights lying on top of each other, I'm pretty used to anything you can throw at me. Well, after checking out the new Anchor Bay movie, Wrestlemaniac, I think wrestlers have found themselves a brand new icon!

The story here is about a group of amateur porn makers who, while on the way to Cabo San Lucas get lost and find themselves in the middle of nowhere. When they ask for directions, they find that they're very close to a ghost town called La Sangre de Dios, where, years ago, an insane Mexican wrestler, who the government was experimenting on, was 'stored'. Well, this is too much for our 'film' makers, they really have to film in a ghost town, so off they go. Well, I think you can see what's coming next, the legend is true, the wrestler is still there, and our pornographers begin to die one at a time.

As a horror movie, Wrestlemaniac falls a bit short, but as a homage to an 80s slasher movie, this one is terrific! Using a masked Mexican wrestler as the monster is really genius, there's a built in way to stop the monster (remove his mask), and doing that will probably hurt you a lot more than it's worth. If you're a fan of slasher movies, then Wrestlemaniac is right up your alley, if you're a wrestling fan, Wrestlemaniac is right up your allay, and if you're a fan of both (like I am) the Wrestlemaniac is a little slice of heaven! I'm giving Wrestlemaniac three and a half out of four cigars, because, while I loved it, I can see that it might not be everyone's cup of tea, and it did begin to feel like it was running a bit long, once the killings got underway I found myself wanting more blood and less tension!
