Making Poison (2007) - By Brian Morton

Posted on Saturday, March 01 @ Mountain Standard Time by Duane

When a movie takes an unexpected left turn, usually it's enjoyable, but once in a while I see a movie that takes that turn and makes me regret it...even if, in the case of Making Poison, it makes me regret it in a positive way.

Making Poison is the tale of four kids, all of whom are bullied to one extent or another by different people in their lives. When the hit on the idea of making a poison to 'take care of' the people who are making them miserable, they hit the library and do some research. After gathering all sort of ingredients, they make their poison, fill their bottles and, we assume, are about to rid themselves of their problems.

I won't give away any details about the excellent short, other than to say, one kid is making the poison for reasons all his own, and they don't involve ending his suffering. Making Poison takes a common childhood fantasy and gives it a very adult twist. You'll find yourself laughing through most of the movie, and then, suddenly, you'll find yourself moved nearly to tears. I'm giving Making Poison four out of four cigars, this movie is what most dramas wish they were, I have to admit, I'm looking forward to seeing what director Le Xuan Hoa will do next! You can find out more about Making Poison by heading to the Black Lantern Films web site. I have to admit, I received three movies in the mail from Black Lantern Films, and they were three for three, that's quite a batting average for a group of indie filmmakers, I hope they keep me on their mailing list permanently!! So, until next time, when I'll share my personal recipe for poison, which involves almost anything that my sister-in-law might cook, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
