When a movie called Cult Movie crossed my desk, my first thought is this is some comedy, a parody on cult movies, well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Cult Movie, from writer/director J.P. Ritter, is a movie about a cult!

Cult Movie uses the currently fashionable 'reality' style, the movie is filmed as a documentary. J.P. Ritter stars as himself, a filmmaker who's going behind the scenes of a cult that's been targeted by the F.B.I. in order to tell their side of the story. What we get to see is what you'd expect, a bunch of people who are looking for some answer in their life being led around by someone who's not totally mentally balanced.

If you scratch the surface of Cult Movie, what you'll find is a bit of commentary on religion (and what it can become put into the wrong hands), and the kind of people who are drawn to this kind of experience and why they're drawn there. Ritter's low budget ways are highlighted by the documentary style, what might have seemed 'cheesy' on a bigger budget are actually strengths here. I'm giving Cult Movie four out of four cigars, because what might have turned into a straight on horror movie, turns into something different in a very subtle way.
