Film Reviews: 305 (2008) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Friday, August 01, 2008 @ 11:48:55 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

If you haven't seen the movie 300 yet, then you're going to want to check it out. The stylized story of 300 Spartans fighting innumerable odds in the famous battle of Thermopylae is a great action movie and not to be missed. Besides, if you don't see 300, then you'll be at a loss when you check out the spoof/sequel, 305.

The premise here is that the Spartans left 5 men behind to guard a goat path that lead to the scene of the famous battle to Sparta. Told in documentary style, 305 follows our 5 not-so-courageous Spartans as they're blamed for the deaths of the 300, then go into hiding. Then, as the Persians begin their final assault on Sparta, the 5 must band together to save their homeland from it's ultimate fate.

305 is a wonderful mockumentary, with characters that definitely have their roots in the highly successful sitcom, The Office. There's Claudius, the inept boss, Daryl, his nitwitted assistant, Demetrius, who's blind, Shazaam, who comes from the 'far east side of Sparta' and Testecleese, the only one who understands that they were really left behind because they're not really warriors. In the end, the five band together to defeat the Persians armed only with carrots and a rolling pin. 305 is very funny in places and has a cool charm all its own and using computer generated backgrounds gives it a look very close to 300. The disc also includes the original short that was a YouTube sensation. 305 isn't perfect, in fact, it gets a little tired about an hour in, oh, there are laughs, but after a while the jokes feel telegraphed in places and the concept becomes a bit thread bare. I'm giving 305 three out of four cigars, it's not perfect, but it's good enough to sit through once. You can get a copy for yourself by heading over to the Allumination Filmworks website. So, until next time, when I'll be working on my six pack, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
