Film Reviews: Surprise (2008) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Monday, September 01, 2008 @ 00:05:00 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

Some people love surprises, they can't get enough of them! Well, I've never been one of those people, I don't like parties, I hate to be the center of attention and, the one surprise party that was thrown for me, I walked out of, so when I got a new movie called Surprise, I was curious about what it might hold for me...I was looking forward to being surprised, you might say.

Well, surprised I was, Surprise is a short film by Gary Teperman, and it opens with Dave, who's tied up in a chair in the middle of a warehouse floor. When Dave's friend, Gary, walks in, he's sure that the joke is about to end. Well, as the short unfolds, we discover that Gary's the one who tied Dave into the chair and that Gary's got a very nasty surprise for Dave.

Surprise is a story about the people we work and play with, and how we might not really know them at all. Both Gary and Dave have secrets from each other, secrets that have led to this frightening turn of events. Now, I'd tell you their secrets, but, first, that would ruin the short, and second, that would be telling secrets, and I don't want to be known as a blabber-mouth, do I? I can tell you that Surprise is a great short that I'd love to see expanded on. How? I'm not sure, but then I'm a lowly reviewer, not a filmmaker! I do know that these characters are deep and I'm sure that there's more to tell here. I'm giving Surprise four out of four cigars, because it gave me a very pleasant surprise, it's a short with great acting, Bruno Campolo as Dave and Gary Teperman as Ken are great, and Gary's character especially will have you jumping! You can check out this cool short for yourself by heading over to the Crackle Surprise page. You'll be pleasantly surprised too! So, until next time, when I'll be peeking around corners to keep from being surprised, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
