Film Reviews: Green (2000) - By Brian Morton Posted on Wednesday, October 01, 2008 @ 01:05:00 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane
Making a crime drama on a low budget may be one of the hardest things to do. After all, if you can avoid all the gun fights and blood, you need believable actors to pull off your story. Well, the movie, Green, by Marc Powers, manages to take his low budget and turn it to his advantage.
Filmed in 2000 on videotape, Green is the story of a couple poor guys who stumble on a way to make the ink disappear from money. So, the next step is obviously to turn one dollar bills into twenties...right? And so the forgery begins, and with it the good times roll. When the two friends enlist a graphic designer, things get a bit strange. After printing enough money to keep them happy for a while, the designer pitches the idea that one big printing would be best, print a couple of hundred thousand dollars and then lay low somewhere tropical. When one friend agrees and the other doesn't want the party comes to an end, things become strained and then weird, and when things get strained in a crime drama, you know someone's gonna get hurt!
Green is really a tale of greed and how it can change you, and how you might not even know it until it's too late. And, while it's very low budget and, at times, hard to hear dialogue and hard to see things, this is one of Marc's first movies and, for all it's faults, it's still an amazing first effort, I'm giving Green two and a half out of four cigars. You can find out more about Marc Powers and Green by heading to the Green Monster Films web site. So, until next time, when I'll be getting rid of my printing press, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
