Film Reviews: Clown Dad (2008) - By Brian Morton Posted on Saturday, January 03, 2009 @ 19:53:20 Mountain Standard Time by Duane
What would you do if your dad was a clown? No, not a goofball, an honest to God, pie in the face, juggling, drive in a small car with too many friends, Clown? That's the question that's answered in the new movie by Michael L. Nirenberg called, appropriately enough, Clown Dad.
Clown Dad is the story of a teenaged girl, whose father is embarrassing her because he's a clown, and how he goes about winning his daughter back. Although, the premise promises a heartwarming story, Clown Dad is pretty goofy, filled with scenes of the Clown Dad dancing in goofy outfits and other 'clown bits' that are more cheesy than funny. There's even an appearance by Lloyd Kaufman (the godfather of indie film), as Clown Dad's father, Clown Grand-Dad, that's just a short bit and seems to be an excuse to hit Clown Dad with various items in various body parts.
The song is fun, the acting is good, but the premise is a bit weak and the Clown Dad really started to irritate me after a while. And the final scene, which revolves around a pie eating contest that will somehow raise the daughter's grades, is surreal. I'm giving Clown Dad two out of four cigars, it's clearly a one joke movie, and that even wears thin after about five minutes. You can find out more about Clown Dad for yourself by heading over to the Clown Dad web site. So, until next time, I'll be out there running small cars off the road...just in case...until then remember that just because the budget is low, doesn't make the movie bad.
