Film Reviews: Laid to Rest (2009) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Wednesday, April 01, 2009 @ 18:55:10 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

As an affirmed horror-hound, I hate to admit this, but I might just be getting tired of the slasher movie. Now, no one loves seeing teenagers get chopped up more than me, but when a fan (like me) sees a new, good slasher movie, and just doesn't get that excited about it, it may be time to retire the entire genre.

The movie in question is the latest Anchor Bay release, Laid to Rest, and here's the story: A girl wakes up in a coffin, with no memory of how she got to be there, who she is, or where she came from. When she escapes, she's chased by a giant of a man with a chrome skull mask and a wicked knife (hence his name being Chrome Skull), she's picked up by a passing car, taken to a couple's home who want to help her and Chrome Skull shows up to kill anyone between him and the girl (who picks up the name Princess along the way), as she moves from place to place, Chrome Skull keeps following Princess and keeps killing anyone in between them, until the final showdown.

As far as slasher movies go, this doesn't really forge any new paths, it's only in the gore that Laid to Rest excels, from the first stabbing, up to and including the use of a glue as a weapon, this movie revels in the gore, and it's all done really well, the issue I had with the movie, was that the story kind of falls apart about half way through. Once the chase begins, the movie falls into a pattern of chase-kill-rest-repeat that got a bit dull about half way through. Would I recommend Laid to Rest? Yes, it's an excellent slasher movie with amazing effects. Would I tell you Laid to Rest is a 'must see' movie? No, it's just nothing that spectacular. I'm giving Laid to Rest two and a half out of four cigars, if you're a gore hound, you'll love it. If you're looking for an original movie, you'll have to look elsewhere. If you'd like to get a copy for yourself (just to see if I'm right or not) you can grab one over at the Anchor Bay Entertainment web page.
