Film Reviews: Infinities Lock (2009) - By Duane L. Martin
Posted on Saturday, August 01, 2009 @ 01:42:05 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

I've known Dave Wascavage for a long time now.  He makes films that often combine CGI work of his own design with live action to create films that are different from your average independent film.  Well, now after a huge delay in the production, he's finally released his latest film Infinities Lock.

I'll paste the description of the film from his website because...well, it's a good description.

"When the US ambassadors plane mysteriously crashes, its up to a team of Special Forces Marines to perform an extract mission. They soon come under attack - but the enemy isnt clear. Is it terrorists? Or are they creature, unlike anything seen in this universe! The team soon uncover a mystery so old, that to reveal its secrets to the world would spell certain doom!"

Basically what the Infinities Lock is, is a lock that keeps the gateway between this dimension and a dimension filled with demon-like creatures (Hell if you will), who'd like nothing more than to come through the gate and kill us all.  The gate is very ancient, and unfortunately, it's lock is powered by human blood, which eventually drains the person's physical form and traps their soul in this world, so they can never find rest after their physical body has been spent in keeping the lock closed.

So this group of marines is sent in to secure the ambassador and get him to the pick up point.  Unfortunately for the group, things didn't turn out that way.  It all starts when a couple of the demons start attacking the marines in short, surprise attacks, and it all just kind of goes downhill for them from there.

Dave really stepped up his use of CGI in this film.  Helicopters and jets flying over full landscapes, interiors, the gateway and the lock itself, the lock's body draining mechanism.  I've never seen him use so much in one film.  It's no wonder it took so long to get it made.  There were other reasons too, but I can imagine the CGI stuff took quite a while.  Especially the scenes where people had to move an interact in the CGI environment inside the double pyramid where the gate was located.  Some of it looked great.  Some of it didn't work so well.  There were some minor issues with the actor/CGI interactions in various spots, but the one that really stands out for me is when they were walking inside the pyramid and it was obvious they were walking in place.  Generally though, aside from that it all worked fairly well.

There are only two real problems with this film, at least for me.  The first problem is, the story was a bit confusing.  I would have liked to have maybe seen a script revision or something that cleared things up a bit more.  The other problem was the acting.  Some was decent, some wasn't.  My biggest problem with it was that the dialogue and the way it was delivered just wasn't believable.  Couple that with some sound problems here and there that made it hard to understand what was being said, and it made things even more confusing.  There is a long sort of an explanation at the end that clears up some of it.  Basically, the ambassador and his staff were to be used as the new blood for the lock.  That's why the marines were sent in to find them.

Overall, this wasn't too bad of a film.  I liked the demons and I was impressed with how far Dave has come along with his CGI work and incorporating it into his films.  The gate looked great and the flying blob looking demons especially were really cool looking.

Overall, the film is generally pretty cool, and another great effort from a director who's not only a great guy, but who also has a real passion for what he does.  I REALLY want to see Dave do another comedy next, because I believe that's his real forte, but apparently he has one more serious film in the works first and then he's going to do another comedy.  I can't wait.  His previous comical films like Fungicide, Suburban Sasquatch and Zombies by Design, were just a blast, and I always look forward to his films.
