Film Reviews: Monsters, Marriage and Murder in Manchvegas (2009) - By Duane L. Martin
Posted on Friday, December 04, 2009 @ 23:05:00 Mountain Standard Time by Duane

Monsters, Marriage and Murder in Manchvegas is the story of a group of three people, Jenny (Marie Dellicker), Marshall (Matt Farley) and All-Star Pete (Tom Scalzo) who have this little group (by little I mean just the three of them) called the Manchvegas Outlaw Society.  They work a paper route on which they sell lemonade, books and other assorted things to make money.  They also have a club t-shirt they all wear that says M.O.S. on it and they solve the occasional mystery.

These people are all in their mid-20's to early 30's and yet they act like they're all about ten, doing things ten year olds do.  The leader, Marshall, has all the sexual sophistication of a ten year old as well.  See, Jenny likes him and he likes her, but he pretends he doesn't and yet he constantly ruins her dates with practical jokes, so there's this thing going back and forth between them throughout the film.

Also in the film we have a grumpy, later middle aged father with heart problems, a girl who acts bizarre and obnoxious to say the least, a group of college students on a dig looking for remains of these supposedly mythical bigfoot like creatures, a boyfriend the obnoxious girl latches on to and ropes into proposing to her, another girl who's a reporter, a tribe of the bigfoot creatures the students were looking for complete with their own language and even a lesbian one...oh, and murders, which is what the M.O.S. sticks their nose into...eventually.

I say eventually because the film literally goes on for about forty minutes before anything relevant to the micro thin and super confusing plot actually happens.  Up until then, it's simply our three heroes running around doing kid stuff and the obnoxious girl roping in a boyfriend.  The end is equally as messy, with the obnoxious girl running off with the lesbian bigfoot who saved her from the rest of the tribe because they were in love and the tribe was going to kill the lesbian bigfoot for letting the obnoxious girl go.

If by all that you can gather that the film was painful to watch, you're right.  It was.  The dialogue was utterly horrible, and when you pair that with utterly horrible line delivery, it becomes more and more painful the longer you get into it.

I'm sorry, but this film was pointless and boring and has very few elements to hold the viewer's attention.  That said, there are a few good things about it.  There were some cute, original songs, the girls were really pretty (which never hurts) and the bigfoot tribe had their own language, which was kinda cool.  The technicals were all decent as well with good camera work, lighting, sound and editing.  The costuming on the bigfoot tribe could have used some work though.  They were rather cheap looking.

The film itself is well made, but it's filled with poor acting, cheesy line delivery and a story that doesn't match the quality of the film itself.  Another problem is that this didn't need to be a feature.  It just didn't have enough relevant content to stretch it out into a feature length film.  If this had been a half hour short or so it would have worked much better.  As it is, it's so random at times that it really just lacks any ability to hold the viewer's attention throughout the whole film

Now I've reviewed a lot of movies in my time, and there are some that have really left me with a feeling of hate after I've seen them.  As bad as this review is, I want to make it clear that this film didn't leave me with that feeling at all.  It's not bad in a "filling you with hate" kind of a way.  It has an innocence and a niceness to it that avoids leaving you with that feeling.  Mostly it just left me with a feeling of boredom.  I guess it's worth watching simply for how cheesy it is, but you have to know what you're getting into before you watch it if you're looking for a film like that, otherwise, if you go in expecting more, you're going to be disappointed.

If you'd like to find out more about this film you can check out the film's MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/MMMinManchvegas.
