Film Reviews: Cannonball (2008) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Sunday, January 31, 2010 @ 23:05:00 Mountain Standard Time by Duane

Backyard wrestling, it's a favorite topic...whenever the media is on a violence craze and there's nothing else going on. But, if you're like me, then you've often wondered what are the lives of these guys, involved in backyard wrestling, really like. Well, Scott Stafford takes a look at just that in his new movie, Cannonball.

The story revolves around three friends who have been running a backyard wrestling club for years, when their 'top man', Captain Cannonball, quits, the three are left looking for something to do with their lives...or lack thereof. Tony (the head man and writer) thinks he'll go back to a regular job, Bandit (Tony's friend and hardcore wrestler) finds a way to scam money from a local professor who's on the trail of 'Bigsquatch' and then there's Lou (the announcer) who's just completely lost and willing to go along with any plan that Tony comes up with. The three friends decide to follow another guy (Tony's nemesis) to Mexico, but they need money. So, they decide to defraud the professor out of a significant amount of money by planning a week long trip to search for 'Bigsquatch'...and that's where everything goes south...fast!

Cannonball is one of the funniest indie movies I've seen in quite some time...and I'm not talking about dopey jokes, laugh out loud funny, I'm talking about well written character driven comedy that's hard to find in indie films. Every character is well drawn and well acted and it's not long before you're drawn into their world and having a ball going along for the ride. And, Cannonball has an ending that will leave you laughing...I'd love to tell you more, but that would ruin a perfectly cool movie! I'm giving Cannonball four out of four cigars, it's funny in a Napoleon Dynamite kind of way and that's very hard to pull off...but Stafford manages it quite nicely! You can find out more, and get a copy of Cannonball for yourself by heading over to the Cannonball Movie web page.
