Film Reviews: City Island (2009) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Wednesday, September 01, 2010 @ 17:14:32 Mountain Daylight Time by Duane

Family! We all have them, and we all wish that sometime we didn't. Well, in the new movie City Island, we meet the Rizzo family, a family that gets along fine, but one that doesn't really know each other at all, and it takes a stranger in the midst to bring the truth out of each of them.

Andy Garcia stars as Vince Rizzo, a prison guard who has aspirations of being an actor. Aspirations that he won't act on because he doesn't want to tell his wife that he wants to act. In fact, he'd rather her believe that he's having an affair than tell her the truth. And Joyce Rizzo (played by Julianna Margulies) has issues of her own, thinking that her husband is being unfaithful. And, their kids, Vivian and Vince Jr. are handfuls as well. But, when Vince discovers that he has another son from a long-ago relationship, a son who's in jail, he brings him home, unannounced and tells his family that he's just helping out a prisoner! With lie upon lie upon lie, we all know that it's just a matter of time before the house of cards built by the Rizzo family tumbles on them all.

City Island is a charming little movie about family and about how you can live with someone and not really know them. And, it's about trust, trusting the people you love with the most intimate secrets that you have, knowing that, because they love you, you won't be judged...well, at least not too harshly, anyway. I'm giving City Island 3 1/2 out of 4 cigars, it's a fun little movie, but it's not perfect. It's a little long and it all gets wrapped up a bit too neatly in the end for my tastes. But, if you have a family that argues even as it supports each other, then you're going to want to meet the Rizzos! You can meet them by heading over to http://www.anchorbayent.com.
