Alex Ferrari.  In all my years of reviewing independent films, rarely, if ever have I come across a film maker that had such an incredible talent for creating films that are so simply stunning visually, and he also seems to have an innate ability to cast top notch, highly professional talent for his films.  This time around, he's come out with a short called Red Princess Blues that's intended as a vehicle to get funding for the feature length version of the film, and judging by what I've seen here, I don't think (economy permitting) he's going to have much trouble getting people to invest.

The short revolves around a carnival, and the tent where all the carnies hang out and drink after the show.  Zoe, a young, impressionable and very hot groupie type meets up with Rimo after the show, and he takes her into the tent.  After attempting to ply her with drinks so he can more easily have his way with her, she balks and tries to get away.  Unfortunately for her, you don't do that to Rimo, and he gets upset.  Fortunately for her, Princess is there, and doesn't like seeing big muscle bound men manhandling poor, defenseless girls, so...she does something about it.  There's a huge fight that tears the place apart, and when it's over, Princess is the one left standing, and everyone who witnessed it basically learned not to mess with her.  She's actually the star of the knife show in the carnival, and in the animated short that tells the back story, we actually find out why she grew up the way she did.  I reviewed that short in a previous issue of Rogue Cinema, so it's been great to see Alex's vision come to live action fruition.

As in all of Alex's films, the action is great, and this one is no exception.  The fight scene is really cool, and they really trash the place.  I notice that all the characters in there have names and it would be awesome to see how all the different carnies would fit into a larger, feature length story.

This film was a visually stunning short with great action and great acting.  There's really not much else to say about it.  It was more just a scene out of a much larger story that hasn't been made yet, and I can't wait to see it when it finally is, because I know it's going to be awesome.  If you get a chance to check out the short though, do it.  Alex is an amazingly talented film maker and you're definitely in for a treat with this one.
