While zombie movies are a dime a dozen now-a-days, once in a while someone does something so original that you can't help but fall in love with the genre all over again. Well, the new movie from Anchor Bay, The Dead, doesn't break any new ground, but treats the old ground with such respect that I couldn't get out of my seat!

The Dead is the story of a U.S. Army engineer, Lt. Brian Murphy, who's plane goes down while trying to evacuate Africa. They're evacuating because the dead have risen and the world is in chaos! As Murphy tries to find civilization and get himself out of this new living hell, he crosses path with Sgt. Dembele, an African soldier who's trying to get to his family. The two form an uneasy alliance to try to get to safety through the gathering storm of an undead apocalypse!

The real beauty of The Dead is that it plays exactly like a 70s Italian zombie movie. The dead are the traditional slow moving zombies, and the backdrop of Africa makes this one of the more believable zombie movies of late. I honestly can't say enough about this cool movie, the vistas of the African continent are amazing, and setting a zombie movie against them is terrific, and the story is a total throwback to those classic zombie movies of the past, there's no escape, no one is safe and the ending will leave you wanting much, much more!
