Camel Spiders (2012) – By Brian Morton

SyFy Channel must enjoy being the home of retro-style monster movies, because every time I look in my inbox, there’s another one! This month, it’s Camel Spiders!

Camel Spiders is the tale of an Army Captain from Afghanistan who’s bringing home a fallen friend. What he doesn’t know is that, inside his friends body, is a camel spider, a nasty creature that reproduces quickly and, apparently, hates humans! When the body comes home, there’s an accident and the spiders are unleashed on a small town in southwestern U.S. Now, a small group of people must try to get past the hordes of spiders to safety before the Air Force arrives to blow up the entire area…because that’s how the Army solves problems…they blow them off the face of the earth!

Camel Spiders is really just more of the same from SyFy. It’s not horrible, but it’s not excellent, it’s exactly what we’ve grown to expect from SyFy…a Saturday Afternoon Matinee filled with monsters and action, and (as my good friend Joe Bob Briggs might say), not a lot of plot to get in the way of a story! I’m giving Camel Spiders 3 out of 4 cigars, it’s fun, it’s a great way to sit down with your kids to watch an ‘old fashioned’ sci-fi movie, but if you’re looking for something for the grown ups….look elsewhere!
