Cannibal Campout (1988) – By Brian Morton

If you weren’t alive, or were very young in the 1980s, then you probably don’t remember the first wave of horror movies that were made on video and were mostly released directly to video. These were great movies…in their own way…and it’s truly a shame that more of them aren’t out there now. Well, thanks to Camp Motion Pictures, we’re going to get the chance. One of them, that I remember seeing on VHS from my local video store is now on DVD, it’s Cannibal Campout and it’s really an 80s treasure.

The story is really simple, when four college kids go into the woods on a campout they run afoul of a trio of killer cannibals. That’s pretty much it, we didn’t need a lot in the 80s, just some lost kids, a few handy weapons and some demented killers and you got yourself a movie! Cannibal Campout is one of those lost "classics" that is typical of the era (it really brought back memories, I can tell you). From the soundtrack that sounds like it was played on a Casio keyboard, to the gore effects, this movie has everything that an 80s horror movie needed. Plus, there more, Cannibal Campout isn’t a straight on horror movie, there’s a ton of humor in there, from the character delivering the classic horror movie line "what could go wrong" on a number of occasions, to the great ending, Cannibal Campout is truly a lost treasure that I’m glad to see finally dug up.

If you’re in the mood for a little nostalgia, or just want to see what we were all watching back in ‘the day’, then Cannibal Campout is really the movie to see. Sure, there were Friday The 13ths and Nightmare On Elm Streets, but these straight to video movies were what we were all really watching! You can see it for yourself by running over to Camp Motion Pictures to get your own copy right now, and I highly recommend it. So, until next time, when I’ll dive deeper into the 80s and put my parachute pants on and try to regrow my mullet, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
