Can’t Stop the Rock (2007) – By Brian Morton

What would you expect from someone who has fully embraced the nickname ‘The Ed Woods of The 90s’? Well, whatever you’d expect you’d get it from David ‘The Rock’ Nelson, a Chicago based low budget film maker. In the new documentary, Can’t Stop the Rock, David Nelson talks about his life, his movies and his obsession with the B movie.

This doc is interesting in that the filmmakers really just put a camera in a room and let David talk, in fact, interviewer Frank Wales only gets in about three questions throughout the entire movie! What’s interesting about Nelson is his passion, while his movies aren’t big budget award winners, it’s obvious the he loves the ‘monster movie’ and just wants his movies to be fun…which most filmmakers tend to forget movies are supposed to be. Through the course of the movie, Nelson talks about his growing up, becoming a Marine and his eventual run as Chicago’s favorite indie filmmaker, and he does so in such a manic style that you can’t help but be drawn to him. Now, I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing one of Nelson’s movies, but from the clips that are shown throughout the doc, it seems that he walks around with a camera and films everything, then edits things together (using narration) to make a movie out of them, which is how he touts people like Forry Ackerman, Tom Savini and Roger Corman as appearing in his movies, he’s seen in several clips basically throwing a rubber ant at each of these men for his movie, Devil Ant.

The bottom line is that, if you’re a fan of film, you’ll see a part of yourself in David ‘The Rock’ Nelson, his love of the business is contagious and he nearly makes you want to run out and start making movies yourself…after all, if he can do it, why can’t I? I’m giving Can’t Stop the Rock three out of four cigars, while the topic is interesting, I would have liked to see movie clips from the movies that were spoken of, and Nelson’s delivery is near manic…to the point that I really wanted them to take the coffee away from him, he’d obviously had more than enough!
