Classic Cinema: Howard the Duck (1986) – Jason S. Lockard

Our world has began to be inundated with comic book movies and tv shows. Marvel seems to be gold at the box office. Over the last few months we have been looking back at some of those little known comic book movies from yesteryear. This month we look back and the very first Marvel feature film.

In 1986 Universal Pictures and Lucasfilm Ltd. produced Howard the Duck. A scientific experiment brings extraterrestrial life forms to the Earth through a laser beam. First Howard is a 27 year old Howard the duck a bachelor on Duckworld. But in addition an angry being arrives as well. Now it’s up to Howard and new friends, Beverly and Phil to save the world from impending doom.

Upon its release, the film received negative reviews from critics and was a complete box office failure. As the years rolled on it has been called the worst film ever made. Well, I would have to disagree with that idea. I have seen many films I couldn’t barely even make it through.

By no means is this film Citizen Kane, but for just a fun escape from reality; I think it does the trick. So before Howard the Duck makes his Marvel Studios movie debut, check out the original. Who know you may just like it. So until next month when we take another look at a classic comic book movie. This is Jason Lockard reminding you, if you want to see a good movie, check out a classic.
