Crime and Punishment (1935) – By Jason S. Lockard

Novels being made into feature films have been going on since some of the first films rolled into theaters. In 1935 Crime and punishment based on Fyodor Dostoyevski’s novel debuted. Now 80 years later Mill Creek Entertainment is releasing this classic on DVD.

This film stars Peter Lorre in just his second English-speaking role as Roderick Raskolnikov. An impoverished student struggling with the nature of good and evil. He is riddled with guilt and paranoia after he committed a murder he felt was just.

After watching this film it’s hard to believe that Peter Lorre had to fight to get this film made and star in it! The film is riveting and exciting.

This DVD features a film transfer that looks amazing for a 80 year old film. The only downside is no bonus features, but for classic film fanatics like myself having a beautiful copy of the film will be enough! I highly recommend you head over to and pick up a copy today!
