Dark Passages (2012) – By Brian Morton

I had thought that I had seen every kind of murder weapon imaginable used in slasher movies. Everything from the common kitchen knife to a weed whacker, I’ve seen it all. Well, I thought I’d seen it all, until I saw Dark Passages, a slasher movie of a different type!

Amanda and Michael wake up in the middle of a forest, not knowing how they got there or what is going on. Soon, a crazy woman runs past, screaming about something, not long after that, they find that they’re not alone in these woods, there’s someone out there with a war hammer and intent on using it to end their lives! Now, that might seem pretty simple, but Dark Passages is far more complex than that, who’s in the woods, why are they out there and how does this weird game end? It’s all answered…well, mostly…in a pretty satisfying way.

Writer/director Cesar Cruz has put together a movie that’s something beyond a slasher movie, while still giving slasher fans the blood and gore they want. The acting is terrific, the story is good and the music is amazing…but what will grab you the most it the character Hammer. We never hear him speak, we don’t know what his back story is, but he’s one of the most compelling killers I’ve ever seen on film. Maybe it’s the costume, maybe it’s that damned hammer, but something about this character made me want to know more!

I’m giving Dark Passages 4 out of 4 cigars, and I sure hope that Cesar has some more up his sleeve, this seems like too good a movie not to have a follow up! Find out more about that damned hammer for yourself by heading over to http://www.outworldentertainment.com.
