Freak Dance (2012) – By Brian Morton

If you’re familiar with the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, then you probably know what to expect from a movie from them. If you’re not, then you might want to take a deep breath, because this movie, Freak Dance, is one of the weirdest things I’ve seen in a long time.

UCB tend to be a comedy group that focuses less on ‘jokes’ and more on situational or character comedy, and Freak Dance is no exception. While there are some people here who you’ll recognize from TV, namely, Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh and Matt Besser, most of the cast isn’t as familiar….but just as funny. The story here is about street dancers, the toughest dancers that there are!

A group led by Funky Bunch is trying to save their hang out from being closed by the building inspector general, they’re being fought by Dazzle and his crew, Funky’s crew is about the dance, while Dazzle’s group is about ‘private dancing’….so the two groups hate each other! As the two crews fight each other, there’s a huge ‘dance fight’ that’s been put together where all the dance crews from the city are coming to decide who’s the best…think The Warriors gang congregation…only with dancing.

Freak Dance is one of the best things I’ve seen from UCB, if you’ve ever seen one of those dance movies, then you know what’s being parodied here, and it’s parodied very well…not that it’s hard to make fun of those movies. I’m giving Freak Dance 4 out of 4 cigars, I went in expecting something not as funny as this actually was and I was very very surprised!
