FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 1, 2011 --
Los Angeles, CA – In January 2011, Patron of the Arts (POTA) hosted a grant contest on Facebook for independent filmmakers who had completed film projects. These grants are intended to assist filmmakers with marketing, distribution and festival expenses so that they may reach a wider audience with their works. Twenty-three projects competed for four grants.

Patron of the Arts is pleased to announce the following projects as the awarded grants: ALMOST HUMAN written and directed by Abraham Vilchez-Moran; GASP written and directed by Thomai Hatsios; NDAPEWA: I AM GIVEN, a documentary by Erin Buckley; and A NOTE TO ETIENNE written and directed by Elias Benavidez

Engaging over three thousand facebook users, the online community helped to determine where POTA would contribute $1000 in grant making dollars, as filmmakers utilized the power of social networking tools to promote, publicize, and build an audience for their works.

Of the 23 participating projects, many were student filmmakers as well as artists who had just completed their first projects. Participating projects included a wide variety of topics and issues from entertaining comedies to hard hitting dramas tackling social issues.

POTA grant recipient Elias Benavidez moved to Los Angeles three years ago to tell stories. He created a handful of short films and even worked on some big budget ones, but he woke up every day with an even larger fire in his belly with the fear it might someday burn out. Elias says "what most people don’t really grasp, my family included, is that filmmaking isn’t a cheap dream... So when organizations like POTA reach out to help emerging filmmakers, it’s nothing short of amazing. Personally, as a filmmaker, my mind’s not set on personal profit. My main focus is making a great film and putting it out there for people to see. Therefore, this particular grant will help us with festival costs and shipping – ultimately allowing us to continue forward and hopefully make our mark within this competitive industry.”

Thomai Hatsios described her experience with the grant contest by saying, “Joining in the POTA grant competition has been a wonderful opportunity for me as an artist/film maker to overcome issues of self promotion and simultaneously raise awareness of the cost that goes into sharing a short film via film festivals. My short, narrative, directorial film debut, GASP, has been submitted to few film fests due to lack of funds needed to match the financial fees of submission. The POTA grant can enable me to share the story of a single mom who struggles with a debilitating illness and overcomes an incredible situation, with a wider audience by helping with the cost of festival entree fees.”

“In a struggling economy its always funding for the arts that goes first. That is why we feel so compelled to find new ways to rally the community together to help artists and filmmakers to be able to create new works.” says Cindy Baer, the company’s co-founder. “Art and film are vital parts of a healthy community. They improve communication and understanding between different cultures, offer positive outlets for expression and can even save lives.” POTA thrives to involve the community more actively in the process of its Artists filmmaking and art projects from conception through exhibition.

Patron of the Arts is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings the world together through filmmaking and art. They pride themselves on connecting independent filmmakers and artists with supporters (patrons) of the arts, so that together important film and art projects may be created and presented to the public. Like in the days of ole’ when the public came together to support artists, POTA aims to rally communities to support it’s artists in today’s age. Patron of the Arts currently facilitates two fiscal sponsorship programs which are open to artists who are not yet able to support their cost of living through their art and film work. The "Sponsor an Artist" and "Sponsor a Filmmaker" programs offer person-to-person micro-donation assistance for independent filmmakers and artists, which are tax deductible for donors. Unlike traditional grants, where multiple applicants are competing for the same, small number of grants, POTA’s business model can help a large number of Artists in need, provided the Artists qualify for the program, in aligning with its non-profit program criteria and mission. Future program components aim to include educational workshops taught both in the local community and and via live streaming.
