Hello all you happy, smiling, wonderful people out there.
I am dstephe4 and I am retarded. This is because I don't know about Manga. Many people love this rather colourful and occasionally sleazy genre, but I must admit to being something of a novice here. I've seen Battle Royale, and that's about as far as I go.
So, dear minions. Go forth and name me the best Manga movies / books ever, and I'll go off and investigate, generally making my world a sunnier, happier, busier place.

Best manga is Berserk. It's really superb and everyone should check it out.
I've seen most of the anime series - and it is indeed quite awesome. Guts is like... rad
As for manga, the traditional comic book form of Japanese storytelling, I just finished reading Ichi the Killer/Korishiya 1 - and if you want to talk about sleazy/disturbing Yikes. Crazy little number. Makes the film of the same name look pretty tame (a poet and I didn't know it). So much penis torture in that book... you just don't want to know However - I did think it was a pretty great little read _________________ Josh Samford

I wouldn't call BATTLE ROYALE a Manga, because it's not a cartoon. And that's not the correct use of the term anyway.
Manga refers to the art style used in Japanese comics. It's characterized primarily by stationary figures and moving backgrounds, and characters with big bug eyes (the reason being because just as we Americans see Asian eyes as small and squinty, they think the way to draw "American" eyes is big and bug-eyed. I always found that amusing.) It was influenced by Jack Kirby's exaggerated proportions to show power, so there's a lot of super dynamic figure design and action. That's Manga, and as a result, they also use the term for the comics / books done in this style.
However, you usually refer to animated cartoons made in the Manga style as Anime, and most Anime are known for having the same really creative, over the top, fun style.
BATTLE ROYALE is just a Japanese film that has a lot of these elements. But because it's not a cartoon, I wouldn't call it Manga. Or an Anime.
