Well, being that this is one of the first posts, it should be interesting to see how this section grows if the forum picks up. I wonder, will I be the only Asian cinefile? Probably doesn't matter, cause I like talking to myself as well
Might as well make a list out of this little endeavor, so here she goes:
Battle Royale (Duh! Have yet to see the sequel, likely will not anyway)
Audition (HUUUUGE Takashi Miike fan)
Ichi the Killer
Electric Dragon 80,000 V.
Shark Skin Man and the Peach Hip Girl
The Street Fighter (Duh! Chiba is t3h man!)
Versus
Wild Zero
Tetsuo: The Iron Man (Duane might murder me for it some day though...)
Ringu
Chaos (From the director of Ringu)
Dark Water
Kairo (Best Asian psychological horror flick, EVER... maybe)
Seven Samurai
Shinjuku Triad Society: China Mafia War (Miike)
Gozu (Miike)
Graveyard of Honor (Miiike, I know, I'm a fanboy)
There are more, but I don't feel like thinking too hard Anime I do not count as the exact same thing, but do have a few favorites but am not exactly well versed in the genre. _________________ Josh Samford

Damn it Josh, you forgot to mention "The Story of Ricky!"
I'm still getting into the Asian movie scene (I have mostly daikaiju films in my collection from Godzilla to Yamato Takeru to DaiMajin) but I've found some hidden gems and some really bad flicks already:
The Gems: "Heat After Dark" and "Down To Hell"- Ryuhei Kitamura's first two feature films. The latter was a prelude to VERSUS.
The failures: "Bio-zombie" - It had a lot of potential but it falls on its face a lot! It becomes a self-aware horror/action/comedy too late in the film and suffers for it. Decent ending though (at least I thought it was).
"Washango" (a.k.a. Volcano High) - This movie suffers from two major problems. The plot is unintelligible and the lead character, despite having amazing powers, is a total wuss. Still it had its fun moments.
Those are just a few examples of my samplings of Asian cinema. The rest can be found on the B-Movie Collection Page on my site. _________________ Jordan Garren

Of all the ones listed, I have Battle Royale, Stacey, Story of Ricky, Versus, and Down To Hell. I have a lot of others as well. Battle Royale wasn't bad, but Stacey was stupid and made no sense at all. I also want to comment on Bio-Zombie because I bought that one thinking it would be a goofy zombie movie, and it ended up being a total downer. All the people you don't want to die end up dead. Then again, there's one total jerk who bites it good, but unfortunately his abused wife bites it with him.
Now there's one Japanese movie that in my opinion stands out way ahead of the rest. It's called Hiroku the Goblin. If you can find this one, get it. It's got the coolest looking demon spider things in it I've ever seen, some great comic moments, and a couple of moments that will make you crap your pants. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese cinema, because more often that not it just makes no sense whatsoever. There are some really grat movies though. It just takes a little reading and a little efford to find the good ones.
There's some you should really stay away from. Naked Blood is one of them. That movie is lame as all hell. Another one is Tetsuo the Iron Man. That movie is beyond stupid and in my opinion, completely and utterly pointless. Josh liked it, but he eats shrimp and crawfish, so we know about him. _________________ Duane L. Jordy: Actually, I don't believe Story of Ricky is Japanese. At least, not completely. I believe some of it was actually shot in Japan (I remember reading that a long time back I think), but as far as I know the cast are from Hong Kong.
I might be the only person around here who enjoyed Bio-Zombie then I take Yes, it's pretty stupid, but there are two reasons I count it as a 'good' film. First, it has Sam Lee, who is an awesome character actor (the shaggy haired stoner dude). The second reason is Sam Lee's character utters the line "That guy must be the king of balls", hard not to dig on that!
Evillkown: Hello there and welcome to the clubhouse! Excellent list you have as well. I still haven't seen Stacey as of yet, but I've read a lot of negative reviews that have kept me from it. I'll give it a shot one of these days though, just looks like something I should see.
I totally forgot to list Suicide Club in my 'favorites' list above, I'm one of the few people out there who are really fanatical about the film. Maybe it all doesn't make a lick of sense, but I was a fan by the time I saw all those kid's heads crushed under that subway train I would also like to say Evil Dead Trap has the nastiest eyeball damage I've ever seen in a film, ever!
Duane: I still have to check out that Hiroku the Goblin one of these days. So far the only Shinya Tsukamoto flicks I've seen are the two Tetsuo films, and I'm highly interested in seeing more.
I can't believe you've actually seen Naked Blood I must say. From what a friend of mine told me that flick was pretty hardcore, if I'm thinking of the same film. The one where that scientist's son starts giving a drug to a group of patients that makes them feel pleasure instead of pain, resulting in some serious S&M psychosis? I think that's the flick. I haven't had the chance to check it out, but I aim to one of these days. I've went through all the hardcore stuff I believe Italy can offer, it's about time to step to Japan Guinea Pig, Naked Blood, Guts of an Angel, etc.
Also, for 'dissing Tetsuo, Shrimp AND Crawfish all in one paragraph, I'm afraid I must challenge you to a duel...... TO THE DEATH! Grab your blade, I'll meet you behind the park at 6:30. _________________ Josh Samford

Naked blood was not only stupid, it was really lame and somewhat boring. The gore wasn't as extreme as it was disturbing, and it wasn't even all that disturbing. It's more like you just hate seeing attractive Japanese women hacking themselves up for reasons that were entirely not their fault. I was actually hesitant to watch it for a long time because of the things I'd read about it. It turned out to just basically suck, and it's got a WAY stupid ending.
As for the duel...I showed up. Where the hell were you shrimp boy? _________________ Duane L. Martin Webmaster - B-Movie Central Editor / Webmaster / Staff Writer - Rogue Cinema

Oh I was there, in the stealth of darkness I waited for you to make your move, but then decided to walk across the street to the gas station and pick up an Ice Cream Sandwich. Dang, them things are good!
Well I think I'll have to check out Naked Blood sometime then. Even if it's crappy, as long as I can take the gore, that's all there is to it. Japanese girls 'ought not mutilate themselves... but if they do, I'll be watching!... I need help _________________ Josh Samford

Man, I went there to get a slurpee. I didn't see you in there. You must have seen me in all my brute awesomeness and hid behind the Cheetos.
As for Naked Blood, unless you can rent it, don't waste your money. It's really a pretty worthless movie. _________________ Duane L. Martin Webmaster - B-Movie Central Editor / Webmaster / Staff Writer - Rogue Cinema

Well since Duane is picking on Josh for like certain films..... (and yes Josh, I know that Ricky is a Hong Kong film, but that's still Asian territory bud
I thought "Hiruko the Goblin" was uninspired and quite boring. The spiders with human heads were kind of cool but that was about it. The movie had tons of potentional and instead fails to achieve a frightening atmosphere or consistent scares.

This coming from the guy that actually LIKED Q: The Winged Serpent. That movis is the turd of all turds. So basically, your opinion on anything as cool as Hiroku the Goblin is absolutely meaningless to those of higher quality tastes.
So stuff that in your crack pipe and smoke it. _________________ Duane L. Martin Webmaster - B-Movie Central Editor / Webmaster / Staff Writer - Rogue Cinema

Hey Josh, thanks for the welcome!
I am with you on Suicide Club. I was hooked from the beginning. Right, it doesn't make to much sense, but I just seem to like those weird ass movies like this. The members of that 'gang' (forget the name of it) were quite interesting...
As for Stacey, I guess I'm one of the few that liked it. Mainly cause it's just a weird ass movie, and like I said I find those movies to be interesting...I would suggest watching it, and if you hate it, just blame me!!
On a side note, my name is Josh, as well.
Well hey Josh! Excellent to find another Suicide Club fan, I've talked to a lot of people who just didn't get it. Not that there's a simple way to 'get it', but man is that a powerful movie.
Excellent to see this thread has actually had some life to it (regardless of Duane and Jordan's bitter love/hate relationship), once we get enough members, the Asian Cinema forum will dominate everything that stands in it's path! Hi Jesse and welcome aboard! You have excellent taste in cinema if I may say so myself
I haven't seen Sister Streetfighter nor Samurai Fiction as of yet, but I've heard good things. I had someone on my site telling me about Sister just last week and it sounds like a heck of a flick if you go in with the right expectations. I plan to pick up that Sonny Chiba 10-pack DVD sometime soon, I'm pretty sure it's available on there. _________________ Josh Samford
