This press release contains several developments from distributor Wysiwyg Films including upcoming feature film releases, an international filmmaking competition, new models of digital distribution, and training courses. Wysiwyg is carving a new way forward for releasing independent film using emerging forms of digital technology. Company directors Tom Swanston and cauri jaye are creating forward-thinking business models to take full advantage of new digital networks for cinema and IP delivery to bring independent films to audiences across the world. Wysiwyg also increases the viability of independent film by teaching and advising new talent, educating industry players about digital distribution and encouraging the use of new filmmaking techniques.
UPCOMING RELEASES
THE PLAGUE in cinemas 6th October
Urban drama set for release through the new Digital Screen Network (DSN) in Odeon, Vue and independent theatres across the UK. Wysiwyg will use the increased flexibility of the digital screens to have a Nationwide preview screening on 3rd October, headed by the premiere at Odeon Covent Garden, followed by a run from the 6th October. The launch party, on 3rd October, will take place at a key central London venue. There is already a huge underground and mainstream following for the film, with support from Eminem, Dr Dre, and Missy Elliott. It has a superb hip hop soundtrack from known UK artists such as Skinnyman and DJ Flip, which Wysiwyg will release when it finds the right music distribution partner. Winner of Mike Leigh’s inaugural Katrin Cartlidge Award, the rough and ready no-budget film has been praised as “an outstanding achievement” by Empire, and “a raw slice of urban life, which has an authenticity and universality that is sure to strike a chord” by the British Film Institute and “Brims with vitality… impressive thesping, streetwise wit and visual inventiveness” from Variety.
SOUL SEARCHER in stores 14th August
This high-concept, action-packed, sci-fi action adventure tells the story of Joe Fallow, young street sweeper, who becomes apprentice to the Grim Reaper. Independent film at its very best, it took director Neil Oseman four years of torment and torture to make, and the DVD contains a feature-length making-of documentary that shows it all with brutal honesty. The Guardian has hailed director Neil Oseman “The Spielberg of Herefordshire”, and praised the film as “A fantasy action movie in the grand style… It looks great and moves beautifully”. The film has received acclaim as “a rollercoaster ride” by Disorder Magazine, “crackingly effective action… Miles ahead of some of the multi-million dollar blockbusters” by The Birmingham Post and “ground breaking digital filmmaking, it has heart and soul and action and excitement” by Impact Magazine. The film has also generated support from George Lucas and Rick McCallum.
SCARLET KISS for UK and European release 2007
Wysiwyg to release feature vampire period drama Scarlet Kiss. Principal photography takes place on location in Cornwall, Whitby and Scarborough. Set in the 18th and 19th centuries, the film uses period costumes and traditional tall boats from Master and Commander under the supervision of Julian Hicks – nautical supervisor on several Hollywood blockbusters. Director Stephen J. Bland is an established music video and feature director, having made the documentary feature Hedenology and the action feature Frank.
DIARY OF A BAD LAD for UK cinematic release January 2007
Barry Lick, a former film studies lecturer, recruits some ex-students to make a documentary about a corrupt local businessman who deals in prostitution, property rackets, pornography and drugs. Gritty, harsh, dark, and comic, it has Bruno Coppola saying “it’s one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time” and “I’m gobsmacked at how good it is” from Manchester Evening News. It has already created a stir in the North West where, after a screening, audiences accused the filmmakers of being criminals.
THE VIRGIN TRADE for IP release
Wysiwyg picks up this hard-hitting documentary for IP release. The feature documentary explores the seedy and sometimes violent world of the sex trade in Thailand, from filmmakers Stuart Kershaw and Sam Fazackerley of In The Dark Productions.
WESTWOOD PARK for worldwide distribution
This 6 season, English-language, soap opera delves inside the lives of the wealthy, and those aspiring to wealth, on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. Sex, politics, money, drugs, rape, murder and all the other scandalous elements of day-time television make this an addictive show. The series has received rave reviews in its first airing and will soon appear around the globe.
Wysiwyg has been invited to attend the first ever Nordic Co-Production forum in Haugesund, Norway on August 21-23. Wysiwyg will attend with the feature project CHRISTMAS STORY: The untold story of Santa Claus – his childhood and how he grew up to be one of the best-known and loved mythical characters of our time. It comes from Juha Wuolijoki of Snapper Films, Helsinki. Filming is set to commence in Lapland on 11th September and will continue until end of February 2007. Wysiwyg is seeking completion finance for the production.
WYSIWYG MUSIC launches with a release of the single Daddy, where’s my butler? by The Toffs, and Wide Awake by James McIlwraith.
WYSIWYG 80-80 INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE
Inspired by their win in this year’s Cannes 24 Hour Film Challenge with Towel Talk the mystery - a four minute film made in four hours (from concept to completion!) - Wysiwyg will now run an international competition with production teams from 8 major cities competing to produce an 80-minute feature in 80 hours. The Wysiwyg 80-80 International Challenge will commence in Spring 2007. Working with Film Commissions from each of the cities Wysiwyg will select teams from LA, New York, London, Stockholm, Hong Kong, Cape Town, Sydney, Port of Spain (Trinidad). A documentary team in each city will follow the production teams as they attempt this challenge, forming a six-part reality TV series for a worldwide audience. The winning film will receive worldwide release through Wysiwyg. This July the Wysiwyg team and director Matt Golding completed the test pilot Dead Eyes a romantic comedy, in Woking, UK. Most of the first day was wasted while the writers wrote three scripts, having thrown out the first two because they did not work. Producer Tom Swanston also became ill with a virus, leaving almost all the work to fellow producer cauri jaye.
NEW TECHNOLOGY AND INTERNET DISTRIBUTION
As part of its dedication to using emerging technologies to popularize independent film the Wysiwyg Channel will launch later this year. It will deliver independent films and documentaries via the Internet to PCs, MACs, iPods, PSPs, set-top boxes and mobile phones. This is part of Wysiwyg’s IP distribution initiative along with the institution of Wysiwyg Digital Sales Agents to best exploit digital media worldwide to the benefit of filmmakers and audiences alike.
Wysiwyg is developing training courses about distribution and digital filmmaking techniques for new and established filmmakers with three well-known UK organisations:- New Producers Alliance (NPA), London Film School, and Westminster Kingsway College’s 01 Zero One Creative Learning Lab.
Wysiwyg resources is a new platform to help filmmakers answer some of the simple questions that seem to stump so many aspiring filmmakers - Where do I start? How do I sell my movie? Where can I find a script? The resources area of the Wysiwyg website is updated with a new article on a regular basis, and so is a growing resource for filmmakers.
Digital distribution is the way of the future for all film and Wysiwyg is running at the forefront of this technological advance. Acting as a new form of distributor for independent films across the world.
Giles Clark of Sum International describes Wysiwyg directors Tom Swanston and cauri jaye as “formidable and engaging film geeks”.
