I got my screeners today of Malice@Doll and Full Metal Yakuza and I'll be posting a review of at least one of them in the July issue. Most likely I'll be reviewing one for the July issue and one for the August issue. I may have some comments to post about them in here too. just to get some other discussions going. _________________ Duane L. I absolutely love Full Metal Yakuza and really thought a lot of Malice@Doll too. I was expecting Malice to be just some mindless hentai flick with tentacle rape and such, and although it has a sexual aspect to it, there's a lot more to it than that. The animation is a bit 'old school' on the outset, but with the addition 2-D work it actually comes out looking like a painting that moves. I really appreciate the art. There's really not a whole lot to say about Full Metal Yakuza, just crazy fun stuff There's some serious drama mixed in amongst the zaniness, and one hell of a brutal rape scene, but that's just the sort of filmmaker Takashi Miike is. Some people see it and are surprised by the levels of exploitation that it reaches, much like Fudoh, but there's a true heart to the film and if you know anything about Miike, you realize that films like "Audition" aren't his everyday work, but then again holding Miike down to one particular genre or style is a sin within its self _________________ Josh Samford

I watched it today and it was better than I expected. The part with him at the beach was pretty pointless though and drug on way too long. I'll be writing up my review tomorrow and getting everything finalized for the next issue. _________________ Duane L. Hey, glad you at least liked it Duane. Wasn't sure if it would be your bag or not. A lot of people complain about the beach sequence, I think even Tom Mes said something on the commentary track, but it's never really bothered me. It's a staple of Miike's films. It's the moment in the movie where we grow to know and understand the characters a bit more. The pace drops, only to let us catch our breath before the climax. Without the beach scene, I doubt the lead character would have seemed as emotionally human and the relationship between he, the woman and the pieces of the Yakuza boss within him definitely needed their time. Just my thoughts though, I might be in the minority on that _________________ Josh Samford

Well if we actually got to know the character better during the whole beach sequence it might have been worthwhile, but since all he did was mope around, we really didn't get any useful insight into the character. I did like the movie, but that was just like a big dead spot in it. _________________ Duane L. Martin Webmaster - B-Movie Central Editor / Webmaster / Staff Writer - Rogue Cinema
