Just heard about this extremely odd Japanese flick while visiting the
CHUD CREATURE CORNER today. Here's the description of the film, courtesy of the Fantasia Film Festival's website:

Quote:
A championship wrestling match pits Koji Taguchi against Crush Volcano, the latter is no match for Koji’s signature move, the Torture Ring Strangler. Koji beams as he clutches the Champion Belt, only to have it snatched away by a mysterious new challenger in the ring—a giant squid! A giant squid, in fact, who not only evades Koji’s key attack, but destroys him with a Northern Light Suplex! Koji’s fiancée Miyako watches tearfully, though there’s something about this Calamari Wrestler that seems familiar to her…

The tentacled tackler is the hottest story in the Japanese sports press. The president of the Cho-Nippon wrestling team proposes a fixed match as a publicity stunt, but the honorable Calamari Wrestler will hear nothing of it. Wrongfully banned from the sport, he retreats to the Monhonji Temple to train and meditate, where a young reporter tracks him down and begins to unravel his enigma. But the squid’s problems are just beginning—treacherous businessmen, unrequited love and the wrestling-ring menace of the Octopus Wrestler and the insectoid Squilla Boxer await!

That’s right, you read correctly—the hero of The Calamari Wrestler is a big, bug-eyed, squishy squid. It’s written and directed by Minoru Kawasaki, a veteran of Ultraman Tiga and a variety of manga-to-live-action adaptations, and a man who calls himself both “Ed Wood, Jr. with talent” and “Japan’s Roger Corman.” A very unusual, off-the-wall comedy with a deft dramatic touch, The Calamari Wrestler delivers laughs galore, a little romance on the side and of course loads of amazing wrestling action!

Wow... just..... wow! I think we all need to see this movie, in fact there is now a huge void in my soul that can only be filled once I've seen the Calimari Wrestler. No word on a DVD release anywhere just yet, but I'll stay ever vigil in my quest for the Calimari. Laughing

Isn't it amazing what filmmakers can come up with given the right drugs. Wink

I recently purchased and watched "The Calamari Wrestler" and I had a blast with it. If you have a twisted sense of humor and love weird Asian cinema, then check out this flick.

For those of you who thought you've seen everything.... think again....
