For Immediate Release: JUNE 2010
Following the story of an art student who moves back to his hometown after graduation, and the tragedy that ensues, The Miseducation of Simon Kraus is writer/director Michael Diaz’s first feature film. Using a donation-based fundraising strategy, the production was able to gather $11,000 to shoot the film on location in the sleepy beach town of Melbourne, FL. Created in conjunction with the University of Central Florida’s Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema MFA program, the film explores pertinent issues that twenty-somethings face as mounting pressure to make major life decisions builds in a post-graduate setting.
The character of Simon Kraus (Blake Logan) returns home to prepare for an internship with a prestigious artist in Beijing, but finds himself quickly being reabsorbed into the world of his old high school buddy Evan (Daryn Kahn), who barely makes a living selling drugs for a shady character named “Taliban” Mike (Tan Arcan). A photographer and fellow artist, Mike takes interest in Simon, critiquing his portfolio and commissioning him to paint a portrait of a woman. Unfortunately for Simon, that woman is “Taliban” Mike’s ex-girlfriend, Katrina (Ashley Galloway), who Simon is currently dating. Simon’s situation goes from desperate to worse, and he clings to the prospect of the internship in Beijing as his only salvation, hoping to leave town before “Taliban” Mike finds out the truth.
“I've always been interested in books and films that follow deeply flawed characters, so I took the classic coming-of-age story and put an antihero at the wheel,” says writer/director Michael Diaz. “We're going through a lot of changes as a nation and culture, and it's a particularly stressful time to graduate college and try to enter the workforce. I've seen a lot of friends graduate with degrees in the arts and humanities who end up tending bar or waiting tables for years. With Simon Kraus, I wanted to capture that sense of isolation and let-down that comes with graduating college these days; what happens to the psyche of young graduates when there's no hope of reward for their education? I hope that college-age audiences will connect with Simon through his flaws, and ultimately learn something from his mistakes.”
Shot entirely on Canon’s 7D DSLR, cinematographer Marco Cordero (http://marcocordero.com/) utilized one of the latest tools in an indie filmmaker’s arsenal – Cine-DSRLs allow independent productions to produce films that can compete, at least aesthetically, with the industry standard. The compact 7D still photography camera allowed the filmmakers to shoot in low light, cramped spaces, with a small crew and little equipment - challenges every low budget independent filmmaker faces on set.
The Miseducation of Simon Kraus is currently in post-production; look for it at festivals in early 2011.
