Heartsick (2013) – By Philip Smolen

A young doctor (Mike Paldino) sits in his car, removes his wedding ring and walks out to meet a young woman (Erica Diaz) at a park bench. After some small talk, they both decide to get something to eat. Later, the doctor and the woman find themselves at a local hotel room, but then life takes a hard, horrifying turn…

“Heartsick” is a new seven minute short film from writer/director Chris Werner. His film starts with a very familiar dramatic situation that everyone has seen before and then suddenly launches straight into horror film territory. Werner initially creates a very unsettling mood because you know that Paldino is hiding something. And when the truth is revealed, it is unsettling and creepy.

I don’t want to give much more of the plot away, but Werner has made a short that keeps you involved until the last frame. Of course, the movie ends just as it’s getting good, but Werner has put together a good, satisfying short. I’d like to see him flesh out “Heartsick into a more complete film. It’s definitely got potential.
