Horny Working Girl: From 5 to 9 (1982) – By Duane L. Martin

Horny Working Girl: 5 to 9 is another Nikkatsu Japanese sex film release from Synapse’s Impulse Pictures label, and as it’s called what it is, I suppose it was supposed to be a bit of a spoof, or was at least trying to take advantage of the name of the hugely popular American film that came out two years prior, Nine to Five.

In this film, company executive Mr. Makimura hires a gorgeous new manager that all the office guys are drooling over. She’s highly skilled and efficient, and after a chance sexual encounter with her boss, very enamoured with him, much to the chagrin of the office guys who would also like to date her. Unfortunately, Mr. Makimura is already married, and if that isn’t bad enough, he also ends up banging his secretary. Boy, he gets around huh? Well when all three women find out that he’s been having sex with each of them, initially they’re angry at one another, but then after some lesbian sex, they decide to come up with a plan to get even with him. What’s the plan? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out.

This film, like the other Impulse Films Nikkatsu release this month, Nurse Diary: Wicked Finger (also reviewed in this issue), is a lighter sex comedy of sorts, although this one tends to fall into the uncomfortable situation comedy rather than being out and out funny like Nurse Diary is.

The sex in the film is ok, but as her usual in these types of films, really not all that special. It’s more the situations that are special than the sex itself. A couple of the more interesting situations in the film include the office secretary Mari is working late and gets the silly idea to photocopy her boobs. She does, but then Mr. Makimura comes in and gets turned on by it and does her on top of the copy machine while the copies are running. At the end, the scene where they "drug" Mr. Makimura after tying him to a bed and getting him all hard and then pretending they’re going to cut off his weiner. Fortunately for him, they were only using a bit of psychological torture on him, but, with the help of his wife’s uncle who provided a special little concoction for them to give him, he suffered a fate that was almost as bad, and then lost his promotion to the European headquarters and was reassigned to a small office in Alaska where the few co-workers he had were all guys. Fortunately for him, after a rather long time of letting him suffer, his wife takes pity on him and heads off to Alaska to join him with a cure for that nasty concoction they used on him.

There’s really not much to say about the film as a whole. It’s pretty entertaining. It’s not as good as Wicked Finger, but at least it’s light and fun instead of the typical seriousness we find in a lot of these releases. I far and away prefer the light and fun ones to the serious films in this collection. I hope Impulse is planning to release more of the fun Nikkatsu films, because they’re a lot more enjoyable and entertaining than the serious ones.

For special features, this release includes newly translated English subtitles, liner notes by Japanese film scholar, Jasper Sharp and the original theatrical trailer.

If you want to start your Nikkatsu Japanese sex films collection with the fun ones, then in this order, you should get Nurse Diary: Wicked Finger, Nympho Diver: G-String Festival and then Horny Working Girl: From 5 to 9. There are some good entries among the more serious films as well, but for my tastes, I would always gravitate to the fun ones first.
