I Spit On Your Grave (1978) – By Brian Morton

If you enjoy the dark and disturbing when you’re looking for a horror film…then, for my money, it doesn’t get any better than the original I Spit On Your Grave! One of the first ‘rape/revenge’ tales remains just as dark, twisted and controversial as it did when it was first released…and, Anchor Bay has the nerve to put it out there (in a new edition) on DVD and (for the first time) Blu-Ray!

In case you’ve never seen or heard of this movie, here it is in a nutshell. Jennifer Hill is a writer who’s rented a secluded cottage to write her new novel. She stops for gas and runs across 4 ‘good old boys’ who follow her and rape and attempt to kill her. But, she’s not dead, she’s angry and she sets out on a trail of bloody, violent revenge! And, when I say bloody and violent, that’s pretty much an understatement!

I Spit On Your Grave is one of those movies that will have you squirming in your chair nearly from start to finish and, despite the dated styles of clothing, it’s lost none of its impact over the course of time. And Anchor Bay’s new release contains an alternate opening (which is really just a way to show the movie’s original title, Day of the Woman), the trailers, TV and radio spots for the movie and, best of all, an interview with Meir Zarchi that covers the beginnings of the story right through the difficulties getting ratings and distribution for it. It’s very interesting!

If you’re a fan of ‘dare’ movies, then I Spit On Your Grave is one that should be on your list…and the original is still the benchmark in my humble opinion. I’m giving this release 4 out of 4 cigars, it’s a great disturbing movie and the extras just make it that much better!
