JOKE (2013) – By Michael E. Smith

Directed by Nicholas Duarte, this short film (clocked at just under three minutes) does a lot in a very short time period. Utilizing items from stereotypical “vaudevillian” type stand-up comedy, the film starts out light with a dark overtone.

As the film progresses and the items get “darker” so does the narration, becoming another entity completely. The film looks brilliant. The cinematography is spot on and the transformation of the film is as sharp as the images.

The juxtaposition of narrator Kevin Yon’s voice over with the comedy props on offer helps to make a great transition at the film’s end. Clever, sly and intense, this is a “trippy” little film that shows the humor and the creativity of its makers.
