Melvin (2009) – By Brian Morton

A nerd getting revenge on his tormentors is nothing new to movies, so when I saw the DVD of Melvin hit my inbox, I have to admit I was less than excited. Oh great, another nerd goes crazy movie! Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong! Melvin isn’t about nerds getting revenge, it’s about nerd zombies and nerd possession…in other words, all the cool things we love about horror movies…but with nerds!

Melvin is really that tale of Norton Pincus, a nerdy college student who just wants to do his school work. One evening, while cutting through the cemetery on the way home, Norton is accosted by a zombie…and he’s bitten! It turns out that the zombie is a nerd named Melvin, who’s returned from the dead to exact revenge, but, when Norton kills him, he’s forced to take over Norton’s body to kill those responsible for his demise.

Melvin is a cool little zombie movie that’s not really a zombie movie. But, it’s still got all the things we love about low budget zombie movies, blood, guts, cute girls and there’s even a Lloyd Kaufman cameo! Writer/director Henry Weintraub has created a very cool world where zombies and ghosts are sort of the same thing, and Melvin has an ending that will leave you wanting more!

I’m giving Melvin 3 1/2 out of 4 cigars, it’s not perfect, but it’s a damn cool little movie…and, being a nerd myself, I felt an affinity for the characters anyway. You can find out more by heading over to
