The SyFy Channel is becoming (if it isn’t already) the place to go for old school sci-fi movies. And, I don’t mean those black and white classics, I mean new movies that are totally low budget and old school…stuff you would probably have seen at the drive in back in the 70s and 80s…and I don’t mean that as a bad thing! The latest movie to hit DVD from SyFy and Anchor Bay is Metal Shifters and it feels like an old familiar friend from my childhood Saturday mornings!
It all begins with a Russian satellite crashing to earth. It comes to rest in the small town of Redeemer, Idaho, where 2 brothers head out to gather it up in the hopes of making some money by selling it to the local junk dealer. The only problem is that there’s a space bacteria on the satellite that feeds on metal…even the metals in human blood!!! So, the bacteria animates a giant metal statue that just happens to be being built in the junk yard and it’s off to the races, hunting down humans and trying to find new metals to feed on. Now, it’s up to one of the brothers who found the satellite and his girlfriend to figure out a way to stop the monster before it grows too strong and heads for bigger cities.
Metal Shifters isn’t anything that you haven’t seen before…but that doesn’t mean that it’s not fun. Think The Blob meets The Terminator, all in a 1950s style action movie…yep, it’s just that hokey. But, when you’re watching these SyFy movies, hokey is exactly what you’re expecting. Hey, if you’re looking for an Oscar winner, then check out that movie where Glen Close dresses like a dude, but if you’re looking for some good, old fashioned popcorn ‘cheese’, then drop Metal Shifters into your DVD player, sit back and have a wonderful Saturday afternoon!
I’m giving Metal Shifters 3 out of 4 cigars, it’s not perfect and it’s not for everyone, but if you love yourself some good old fashioned 50s style sci-fi, then you’re gonna love it! Shift yourself over to http://www.anchorbayent.com to get a copy for yourself before the metal in your house comes to life and does it for you!
