Middle of Nowhere (2008) – By Brian Morton

Usually, when the child of a famous actor appears in a movie, I’m the first to roll my eyes.  And, I did just that when, in my inbox appears a movie starring Eva Amurri, the daughter of Susan Sarandon, called Middle of Nowhere.  But, I have to admit publicly, that I couldn’t have been more wrong, and my eyes will unroll themselves now!

Middle of Nowhere is the story of Grace, a girl who just wants to go to college and leave the small town that she’s grown up in behind her.  But, because her mother (played by Susan Sarandon) is so flighty, her chances for a scholarship head down the tubes quickly.  So, Grace finds herself in a dead end job at the local water park in desperate need of twelve thousand dollars to get herself out of her mess.

Enter Dorian, a self hating rich kid, who wants to reinvent himself into something more meaningful.  When Dorian offers to help Grace make her money by selling pot around town, at first Grace declines, but then, in desperation, agrees.  The two, Dorian and Grace, are the center of this little play, Grace, the uptight, straight-laced girl and Dorian, the wild, adventurous guy.  The two quickly become friends, even though Dorian hopes for more, and the two find that they need each other to grow.  Grace needs a bit of spontaneity in her life and Dorian could use the maturity and structure.

Middle of Nowhere is about growing up and it’s one of the most realistic movies I’ve seen in ages.  Both Amurri and Anton Yelchin (who plays Dorian) are great and their onscreen chemistry is great!  After seeing this, I’m really looking forward to seeing more from both, but Amurri has all the makings of a great actress and she’s someone that I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of!  I’m giving Middle of Nowhere 4 out of 4 cigars, it’s an amazing movie with a great cast and a believable story!  You can grab a copy for yourself by heading over to http://www.image-entertainment.com.
