Film Reviews: W The Movie (2008) - By Brian Morton
Posted on Monday, November 03, 2008 @ 18:38:03 Mountain Standard Time by Duane

It's been a very political year. Between Obama and McCain on TV every time I turn it on, I can't wait for this to all be over! Well, when a movie came into my inbox called W The Movie, I have to admit to having mixed emotions about it.

W The Movie is a fantasy movie about President George W. Bush, please don't confuse it with the Oliver Stone movie, but I'm sure that's as big a fantasy movie as this is. Instead of trying to make a bio-pic, writer/director Alfred Eaker has put together a political movie that's pretty palatable and still gets his message across. The story here is fairly straight forward, W comes from another planet, and rises quickly to become the President, leading the No party. Well, W is a war-monger and something of an asshole, but he wins the election and soon is declaring war on Iraq. Now, I'm not going to run down the entire movie, because, if you've seen any news at all, then you'll know what the story is. The beauty of W The Movie is that Eaker (who plays both W and W's arch rival BlueMahler) doesn't base this in reality at all, while everything is familiar, it's also very strange, which I'm sure is symbolic of how he feels in a country that's as out of control as we seem to be right now. W The Movie makes extensive use of CGI, and, while I'm not ordinarily a fan of this much CGI in a low budget movie, it really works here. Nothing is meant to look realistic, it's all very fantastic, and still manages to get across the general ideas that Eaker is trying to convey.

Now, I'm not going to tell you which way I lean politically, because that just doesn't matter, I was watching W The Movie, not for it's political message but for it's entertainment value, and I have to admit I was somewhat impressed. I'm giving it two and a half out of four cigars, because, while the movie starts off very strong, it's a bit long and I felt like I was being beaten over the head with the message after a while. You can find out more by going to the W The Movie web page. If you're a political junkie, you're gonna love this! So, until next time, when I'll be casting my vote for whoever entertains me the most, remember that just because the budget is low, doesn't mean the movie is bad!
